My Star Rating: 4.9/5

The 9th in The Sigma Force series, and possibly the best, in my opinion.

Mr Rollins delves deep into the Genetics and Gene Splicing Systems with this one.

It starts with a trip on a ship with a young Charles Darwin, into the Antarctic and the crew being infested with a strange organism. I wouldn’t want to die this way, that’s all I’ll say.

it moves on to modern times and people playing God by Gene Splicing and creating mutants, or at least hybrid beasts and toxins that kill.

Sigma force are sent in, while one of their own is battling his father getting Alzheimer’s and taking a time out to help with that. Sets up a scenario for a way to help his father with Gene Splicing Technology.

They get called to a secret lab that has exploded and contaminated the people with a virus. They sent out a Frantic Distress call, that chillinlingly ends with “KILL US ALL”!
Personnel from the neighboring base rush in to discover everyone already dead-and not just the scientists, but every living thing for fifty square miles is annihilated: every animal, plant, and insect, even bacteria.

The land is entirely sterile-and the blight is spreading.

Following clues from an ancient map rescued from the lost Library of Alexandria, Sigma will discover the truth about an ancient continent. To halt the inevitable, Commander Gray Pierce and Sigma must unravel a threat that rises out of the distant past, to a time when Antarctica was green and all life on Earth balanced upon the blade of a knife.

They end up back in Antarctica on the Ice, and under it, to caves that were sealed up right at the beginning of the story, where they find some very bizarre creatures.

I really enjoyed this, not least because it brings in Science fact, but also History, The Piri Reis Map, “Big Bertha” Admiral Byrd’s giant snow cruiser, and yes it did exist.
Mr Rollins uses it in the book to great effect.

It first saw the light of day in October 1939 in Chicago

This thing was huge, look at it trying to get under the bridge, and all the people around it.
The strange thing is it could only hold four people, and possibly a plane on top.

The Piri Reis Map from 1513, look it up, it’s quite fascinating, given when it was made
